POS Systems For New Restaurant Owners

When you open a new restaurant, there are so many choices to make which will affect how your business is perceived and run. Everything from the kitchen equipment to the color of the napkins that you choose for your tables makes a difference in how your restaurant is seen by customers. There is, however, one item that few restaurant owners consider when starting up – the point of sale system and supplies. After all, a cash register is a cash register is a cash register, right?

Wrong! Restaurant POS systems have come a very long way in the past couple of decades. Today’s point of sale system is far more than a cash drawer – even more than an inventory control system. In the restaurant business, the point of sale system that you choose can improve everything from prompt service and delivery of food to planning menus and ordering supplies. Some point of sale systems even communicate with a network to track your inventory and enter orders on supplies that need to be re-ordered.

Of course, not every restaurant needs a point of sale system that is that complex and sophisticated. Most restaurants, however, will operate more efficiently with a POS system that is designed especially for use in food service and hospitality rather than by retailers. These are some of the things you should consider when you’re shopping for the point of sale system for your new restaurant.

1. Educate yourself about the point of sale systems available and their capabilities.
The most important thing that you can do is get to know what is available on the market. Ask around among other restaurateurs to get recommendations, or ask if you can see the POS system that they use in operation. That will give you a feel for the kind of POS system that will be right for your business.

2. Evaluate your needs.
Once you have a good idea of what’s available, sit down and evaluate your needs. Is your business small enough to get buy with a basic guest check and receipt system? Do you need a credit card processing solution? Should you opt for a system that helps maintain inventory and tracks spending or do you just need a system that totals the day’s receipts? Will a system that allows waitstaff to enter their orders from the floor using hand-held mobile units benefit you or is it just icing on the cake?

3. Consult a professional.
POS systems for restaurants are an emerging technology. While they have been around for some time, there are frequent innovations. A company which specializes in point of sale systems for the hospitality industry will help you choose the right system for your operation.

4. Don’t let yourself be sold on a system that you don’t need.
If you’ve done your homework on what’s available and what you need, it will be much easier to spot it when a gung-ho sales rep tries to sell you on something that’s too complex for your business. Be realistic – allow for expansion, but don’t get sucked into buying a system with features that you’ll never use.

5. Consider training in the equation.
Many new restaurant owners overlook the value of training hours for your staff. When you’re negotiating a contract for your point of sale system, be sure to ask how much training time is included. An excellent training package can be more than worth paying a little extra for the system. Once you get a figure, says one business expert, push for five more hours. You’ll need it.

6. Look for a good support package.
What happens if your point of sale system goes down just as your customers are getting up from the table? Most point of sale vendors offer basic support for a limited period of time, but an extended support package can be vital to keeping your operation up and running. It may cost you about $50 a month, but it’s worth it. Just be sure that you understand all the terms and conditions so that you get a support package that will cover you when you need it most.

7. Think about all the factors when deciding whether to buy a used or reconditioned system.
While you can probably cut costs considerably by purchasing a used point of service system online or at auction, you may find that it costs you in the long run. One major advantage of buying through a dealer of point of sales systems is ongoing support and training. That’s seldom included with used systems.

A point of sale system can help you run your restaurant more efficiently and save you money. Choosing the best one for your business will help you maximize its benefit to your company. Take the time to educate yourself and research your options and you’ll be sure to get the best point of sale system for your business.

Ten Ideas To Have The Best Year In Your Business

As a consultant to small businesses, I have discovered that many of the complaints I hear over and over again have to do with organization. The beginning of the year is an excellent time to get all aspects of your life organized, so why not start 2009 off on the right foot? Setting up calendars, deciding on time off and setting up a financial system will reduce your stress throughout the year.

Here are my top ten ideas for getting your new year off in a forward direction!

1. Set 3 major goals that you would like to accomplish for the year - These goals should be somewhat simplistic, but give you enough of a challenge. They should also take into account both business and personal needs. Goals help you stay focused on important tasks. This can be a mini business plan or a portion of your overall company strategy. Goals can include such items as getting a clear picture of your finances, creating a collection procedure, or spending more time with your family.

2. Plan now for how you will accomplish your goals - Planning now, early in the year, lets you spread the tasks throughout the months. Be realistic about your time. Not everything has to be done by March!

3. Update your planner for the entire year - Write down all important dates such as trade shows, conferences to attend, major shipment dates, family and employee birthday's and key family events. Include the major tasks needed to accomplish your 3 goals. If you haven't bought those refill pages yet for your planner go to your nearest office supply store right now.

4. Plan your time off - Decide how you will be taking some time off. This includes leaving early to watch your child's baseball game, a week off in your favorite vacation spot, or even several long weekend trips. Being well rounded and rested makes for a more productive worker.

5. Establish a process to handle the paper in your office - Getting control of the mounds of paper is the most prevalent problem in an office. Create a simple routine using Action Files (hanging folders or bins) to categorize paper into actionable categories such as Pay, Do, File, and Distribute. Don't forget to use the biggest bin of all, the wastebasket! Cancel those magazines you never read and request that your name be removed from mailing and distribution lists.

6. Get your overall office better organized - Take the time to properly set up your files, clean out drawers, and give every item in your office a designated place. Store similar items together near where they are used. Put things used often on the most accessible shelves and less used items on top or bottom shelves, or toward the back. Label storage areas and containers to aid items in finding their way "home". You'll be amazed how much better you feel when your office is better organized!

7. Automate the tracking of your finances - All businesses should know their numbers at all times. I see many small businesses who never really know until they prepare their tax return. Using a software package like Quicken or QuickBooks all year long makes the task a lot easier. Financial reports can then be easily printed so that better business decisions can be made during the year. You'll also save time at the end of the year preparing your taxes if you've been doing this all year! Don't forget to create files with the major tax categories to hold the paper documents that are the backup to your computer entries.

8. Automate or delegate some of your mundane processes or procedures - Spend your time on those activities that will most benefit the company. Look for ways to automate using computer applications or even just simple forms. Delegate some of your tasks to others or hire an assistant. Remember, your time is worth money to your business, use it wisely.

9. Sign up for (or at least choose) a professional development seminar to attend - When you expand your knowledge or get excited about new ideas, your productivity goes up. Who knows, that seminar on organizational techniques may be the spark for your company's success.

10. Choose a charitable cause you can believe in and give to it - Give of your time or your money or your talents. It's amazing how much you get in return when you give something away!

Don't let this list overwhelm you. Simply take one step at a time and move through the ideas until you reach the end. You'll be amazed at how simple your life becomes when you make even the smallest steps towards better organizing your life and your work.

How to Structure Your Small Business

Small businesses are difficult to get started these days, and making a success of one harder still. Without a solid business plan, start up cash and good location you’re doomed to fail. However, one possible advantage is that you can be own boss. And, of course, there are a variety of resources available to help the newbie out.

Talking about your “business structure” means, essentially, what legal organization your enterprise is going to take. There are three general types, and details about what constitutes what may change from state to state, but in the main you will choose to be a sole proprietorship, a partnership or some form of corporation. There are pros and cons to each, which we shall investigate.

Kind of businesses

When starting a small business one must decide if they wish to incorporate, set up shop with a partner (or a few) or do business as a sole proprietor. Some of the advantages of sole ownership are that the accounting is simpler, there are fewer filing requirements, there are no corporate taxes and you answer only to yourself in terms of management authority. These are compelling advantages, and this structure works for many “professional service” businesses (architect, writer, insurance agent, etc.).

However, the disadvantages of sole ownership are serious and can affect your ability to grow in the future. You will find that it is often harder to raise capital, and financing can be difficult to obtain from banks. Also, as to sole ownership, you are liable for all debts incurred by the business and if sued you could lose your home and any other assets, whether or not they are legally “tied” to the business.

Partnership structures

Partnerships, often called “general partnerships,” add a few dimensions to the proprietor structure. Of major importance is that you can spread the liability among the partners, therefore dampening the blow of losses, lost lawsuits and/or dissolution of the business. The partnership structure also enables you to bring in additional expertise to the business, and can give you flexibility in remuneration for the partners.

Partnerships, since they are formed by individuals, are taxed in the same manner as sole proprietorships. This means that each partner adds his or her business income to a personal income tax return. Of course, each partner can also deduct business losses (pro rated). Depending on your tax planning and business strategy, this can be either good or bad for your goals. However, there are some disadvantages to a partnership, such as differing visions for the business, an unequal commitment in time or resources and the fact that each partner may be liable for the decisions, debts and actions of other partners.

There will certainly be disagreements over management style, growth plans, operations and future goals for the business. You must learn to deal with these without souring a working relationship. You may or may not do well going into business with family. Finally, you may encounter difficulty in attracting investors, since a partnership is much closer to being a proprietorship than a corporation.

The corporate option

If our fictional partners in the foregoing example decide to incorporate, they won’t have fewer people to answer to, but more. They will have shareholders or investors in the business, people who will help them get started but may also be there second-guessing from the sidelines. These individuals will provide the capital necessary to get the ball rolling, but if this is your situation, you must consider what ongoing role they will play.

With corporations the burden of any liability is not solely resting on the shoulders of one person as with a sole proprietorship, or even several, as with a partnership. You can limit your liability in other ways than incorporating, although that is a major benefit. In fact, there is one business structure called a Limited Liability Corporation, a partnership with the additional feature of corporate-style limited liability.

The IRS also recognizes what is called a “Subchapter S” corporation (or “S Corporation”), available as a structure for most companies with 75 or fewer shareholders. This form of organization allows the company some of the corporate benefits, particularly limited liability and financing options, while taxing it as a partnership.

A regular corporation, of course, is the ultimate form of legal organization for business today. However, it does take some expertise to set up and run, and is not appropriate for everyone. If you do not know how your own business would fare under another structure, you should speak with a knowledgeable business consultant, financial planner and/or attorney. It is not a decision you should make on a snap basis.

Bottom line

Whichever legal structure you decide on is almost at the level of a moot point if there is no business plan – and you can’t develop a plan unless you know what it is you are going to market, where and what your target market is, what your costs are and so forth. Do the research. You may have a great idea but if no one is interested in using your product then you have no business.

The final step before deciding on a legal structure is doing a business plan that extends out at least five years. You have to consider where you may be down the line, and be prepared to make quick moves in the future depending on changing market conditions and other factors. In today’s volatile economy, you must be more vigilant than ever, and no business decision is a simple or easy one anymore. Get some good advice from people and institutions you trust.

Finally, be prepared to ask yourself some hard questions before embarking upon a new enterprise or taking your existing one to the next level. If you cannot be brutally honest with yourself about your product, marketing, sales efforts and the rest, then you will doom yourself from the start. Be honest, be careful, be wise and always – always – have contingency plans ready for those “what if” moments that just might come true. We are seeing a lot of that these days!

Limited Company Formations: Doing it properly

If you want to start a small business with limited financial resources, setting up a limited company may be your best bet. The largest plus point towards a limited company is the fact that it will allow you to legally separate your personal property and the company property. In case of a financial liability, the financial resources of the Company will be affected, but your personal assets will be left untouched. Besides, if you have to take a loan for your limited company, the Director(s) may have to pose as guarantors, but your shareholders will be safe. This will lead to the formation of goodwill among shareholders, which may prove beneficial to your business in the long run. This is not possible if you are registered as a sole trader; you would be held responsible for the financial condition of your company then.

Forming a limited company is a relatively hassle free procedure. You have to register your company first. This needs to be done through a registration office located in your city. You will be asked the name of the company you are registering. Suggest a name and ask them to confirm whether it is available. If the name has already been registered by someone else, you will not be allowed to use that name. In that case, you will have to suggest another name. Once you have decided on a unique name, request the personnel to register your new company with that name.

Next, you have to carry out the incorporation process by filling out the necessary documents. Ask the relevant persons at the registration office to provide you with information regarding what forms have to be filled out. The information contained in the forms will be used in future by law enforcement officials in case of a legal dispute. So make sure these are filled properly. The forms usually contain information regarding the nature of your company (Limited, Limited Partnership, Sole Proprietorship, Non-profit, etc.), the rights of the shareholders, the powers that the Director(s) will have, the physical address of your company, the address of the Company Secretary, and so on. You will also have to submit a Memorandum of Association and the Articles of Association. Prepare these documents yourself, if you know the procedure. Otherwise, hire a formation agent or a good lawyer to create those for you. After filing all the documents, pay the necessary fees and you’re done.

Establishing a limited company is one of the best ways of starting a small business. If you are just starting out in to the world of business, this is probably the best way for you to begin.

Tender Offers Explained: Why They Are Important In the Corporate World

Whether companies like to admit it or not, sometimes a takeover is the only way for a company to survive and be able to thrive again. While takeovers could happen at any time, they are usually most popular when a company begins to waiver a bit. In some cases, a hostile takeover is done by a bigger company simply to gain control of a smaller company.
This generally begins with tender offers. Each shareholder is approached with an offer to buy them out of their shares of company stock. Many shareholders will take the bait especially they stand to make a large profit from the sale. With the arrival of the internet, this process has become streamlined. It used to take prospective companies weeks if not months to complete the tendering process, as they had to send out offers to each shareholder individually, set a cutoff date for a response, and then wait for all responses to come in. There may be more than one company sending out tender offers as well, and if the shareholder decides to sell, they have many offers to choose from. The key is to be the company making the best offers, and get all the shareholders to sell to you.
Tender offers can be very confusing processes for those who do not work in the corporate world, and there are even mini-tender offers that allow a company to bid on shares, but only end up owning less than 5% of the company. This allows bidders to avoid complying with many of the different investor protections that would be held to bidders who would end up owning more than 5% of the company.
Another reason the internet has helped thetender offers process is simply by bringing more advantages to buyers as well as sellers. Bidding through the internet allows buyers to simply post online tender offers, keeping them from having to spend money on things like advertising, stationary and postage, and the seller to evaluate all bids quicker and easier. Bids on online tender offers can easily be changed at any point before the stipulated time frame ends. The interface is not only easy to use, but customer friendly as well. It is also easier than ever to send out reminders of when deadlines are about to hit as well as important messages or notices. While some people may question the security of online tender offers and the bidding on those offers, it is actually more secure than the old way. Hard copies of those offers and bids were much more apt to fall into the wrong hands. Through the internet, every step of offering and bidding can be traced, including all communications in between.
Simply put, online tender offers, and any bidding on online tender offers are extremely important to the corporate world. For large companies, it is the only route towards making necessary acquisitions. To the smaller companies, it is how the company is taken over piece by piece.

Register a Business: Protect yourself from trademark theft

If being self-employed and answering to no one but yourself appeals to you, then you should definitely start your own business. However, you should always register it with the authorities. This is very important, as it will protect your corporate identity from getting duplicated. Let us suppose you have a company named Joe Schmoe Private Limited. You sell only high quality products to your clients at reasonable prices. But then, another company by the same name crops up and starts selling sub-standard stuff to clients. Your brand image will get affected for the other company. On the other hand, if you got your brand name registered, you could sue the other company and force them to cease and desist from defacing your good name in the market. So, how do you go about registering your company name and trademark? It’s not very complicated. Here’s how:

You can register a business name and trademark design at your nearest business registration offices approved by the Government in your country. You have to fill up a few forms and pay a certain amount of registration fees and your business will be registered. It usually takes only a few days. Approach your local business registration offices for details. If you are in doubt regarding the procedure, seek out a good business attorney. He/she will be able to explain things to you more clearly.

If you don’t have the money at hand to get your trademark registered, don’t despair. There is another way of making your trademark legally acceptable, albeit temporarily. Simply put your company logo and name in a sealed envelope, walk up to your nearest post office, and mail it to yourself. When the envelope arrives, it will have the sending date, stamps, etc. making it legally acceptable. As long as you keep the envelope in an unopened condition, it is sufficient as evidence to the registration offices. If you see your trademark is stolen by someone else, all you have to do is bring that envelope to the business registration office. The staff there will open the envelope and analyze the contents. This is called a “poor man’s copyright” system, but don’t expect this to last forever. As soon as you have enough money at hand, do register your trademark formally. That will protect your brand identity from being forged by someone else, forever.

Setting up a new company is the most important first step that you have to take in order to achieve an avenue towards financial independence. In your own company, you are the boss, and definitely, you get to make all the rules. However, setting up a company is not very simple. There are some things you definitely need to consider before you even start the setup procedure.

The first thing you should decide is the type of company you will set up. Will it be a proprietorship, a partnership or a limited company? Each has its own pros and cons. Proprietorship will channel all the profits into your bank account, after deduction of taxes, of course. A partnership will let other people share the expenses of the business, giving you less financial burden. The problem is that with both these business types, your personal assets may be affected in case a lawsuit involving a large sum of money is filed against your business.

If you choose to set up a limited company instead of a partnership, you will be making a very logical decision. The limited company will be treated as an independent entity according to the laws of most countries. This will ensure that in case the company is sued by a client, only the company assets will be affected. The personal asset of the owner of a limited company is untouchable by law in case of such financial liabilities. This high level of financial security causes a lot of businessmen to opt for limited companies, even though the monthly profits made by the company are fully taxable.

Once you have decided which type of business you want to start, you can go about setting it up. If you opted for partnership, the rules are simple. You only have to register at the local business registration office and have your partner(s) sign the agreement of partnership. If, however, you are opting for a limited company, there would be some specific procedures to be followed. In that case, your best bet would be to hire the services of a reputed business attorney or a company formation agent. These people will be able to take care of the procedure for you. A business attorney will provide valuable advice, but you will have to do the hard work yourself. Alternatively, if you hire a company formation agent, he/she will take of all the procedures for you, for a small fee. If you are starting your first limited company, getting the help of these professionals is certainly a great idea.

Start Your Own Business or Have a Safe Secure Job

Sometime ago I was watching a TV interview of the famed music mogul Quincy Jones. He was speaking very eloquently and with a degree of passion regarding his business pursuits. He spoke in a fashion that made his business interest seem very cool, hip and even sexy. He then framed it all into one simple declaration; I am an entrepreneur.

I then said to myself, “I’m going to be an entrepreneur”.

Mr. Jones enrolled me into becoming this word we call entrepreneur. Now my definition of entrepreneur at the time was someone who started businesses, created new products and concepts, made things happen and lived an exciting life. When I was a young boy my father used to make me read the dictionary so that I would expand my vocabulary. So I decided to look the word up and here is the definition I found.

One who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise.

No I said to myself, this couldn’t be right! Merriam-Webster’s has it wrong. An entrepreneur is a take the bull by the horns person, an innovator and business leader. Further I read that an entrepreneur assumes the risks and/or liabilities of a business. Baloney I thought, the dictionary has it wrong.

Well some years later I started my first business and along with that hired a business attorney. He proceeded to tell me all the ways I could be sued or get into problems with state governments even if I was doing nothing wrong. He would tell me how I needed to manage my risks and liabilities. (As a side note in the 2-½ years I ran that first business till I sold it I never had one legal problem).

I then recalled reading the definition of the word entrepreneur. Hmmm I thought, well I guess the old dictionary was right. But I was right too. An entrepreneur can be all of the things I’ve stated as well as assuming the risks associated with being in business.

Entrepreneur or Employee?

We have now entered 2009 and many of you need to make that decision. Not everyone is cut out to be a risk taker and become an entrepreneur. So the alternative is to go out and get a nice, safe and secure job. But alas my friends because having a nice, safe and secure job is now an oxymoron. Therefore being employed is taking a risk as well.

The era of working for a company for 30 years and retiring with the gold watch is over, gone, done.

Who could have ever have imagined that companies like GM, AIG, Citigroup and others could be near collapse. Or that giant Wall Street firms Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns would cease to exist.

My point is obvious, whether you embrace entrepreneurship or employment, either way you are a risk taker.

Simple tips to save money on translation services

With the demand for so many translation services a whole lot of money is also being spend on them. The people need then therefore they are also ready to pay for the amount they are asked for. Well nothing can be done from the company’s part but from your part you can surely do something which would save you money to the maximum but at least to some extend.

Various companies have different methods of charging for their translation work. Some companies ask money depending upon the time it would take for their translator to work on their project, some companies would charge by the number of words written etc. Therefore you need to ask the company about how they would charge you for your project. Apart from these there are points which you should remember in order to pay as less as you can.

1. You must use free translation tool in order to do simple task. You will get the information about these in the internet. You just need to type the keywords like free translation and you will get a whole list for these. These free translation tools will help you for your internal as well as for your unofficial communication and for your external and official documents you can rely on a professional agency or a translator to do the work for you.

2. Before you submit a project to your translator always take some out in advance and see that you have everything you want with you. Check that you have every document that is required and then only submit it to your translator. This will help him to complete the work fast and in the time you have asked for. Not giving full documents in the beginning will waste your time and money because it will take more time for him to write and more money will go out from your pocket.

3. Repetition of text in the project will cost more than required therefore see to that you don’t repeat the same words again and again. If there is requirement for the repetition of that same text then do ask the company for a discount for that. A good company would have a software which would calculate how many same words have been repeated so you must ask the company to give you discount for that. Be as straight as possible you can be exactly what you wanted.

4. Since there are so many agencies so you must compare the prices of them and see which one is fitting into your budget. Different agencies have different method of charging so see the one which you think is fine for you. Compare the prices of agencies which are the best to the middle ones and sometime to the not so good one.

5. Now it doesn’t means that you will go for the agency that will provide you with the lowest offer because you will have to pay for it later since the work might require revision on top of revision so every revision that will take place will cost you money. Therefore select the company which have a good experience that can give you the best work.

With the help of all the above tips you will surely be able to save at least some money from your pocket which you might need for your other project.

Tips to remember when hiring a Professional Translation Service

There are so many agencies which provide a professional translation services as well as a freelance translators so how would you know which one is right for you? How would you know that the translator you’ve chosen is a top professional or a mediocre? How will you find the one who will meet your needs and perform the work well which is given by you? Well let me tell you that all your queries will be answered as you read this article further.

Whether you find for a Chinese Translator or a French translator or even a German Translator you will get all the detailed information about the companies which are providing these types of translators. There are certain points you should remember while choosing a Professional Translation Services.

1. It is recommended that if you would like to hire a professional translator do hire them from a reputed agency other than a freelance translator unless you know the person well or if your close relative or friend has recommended that person to you. The fact is that these reputed agencies can give you full guarantee of the services and the translator provided by them to you. Since these agencies only hire professional and experienced translators so you will not face any problem later. On the other hand these agencies also have another translator revise and proofread in order to confirm that everything is going fine.

2. Now that you have decided to go for a reputed agencies there are few things you need to look for in these agencies. You must check out how many years experience translators are taken in the agency. A minimum of three years of experience would be fine but it shouldn’t be less than that. You must also enquire about the company’s way of working, their regulation system as well as what kind of translation software do they use. This is needed because only a professional and strong translation agency would have a systematic system for regulating the quality of translation work with genuine software helping them. Be bold and ask them whatever you want to know about their company and services since this is your right and it is their duty to answer their customers.

3. When you are almost done with finding out the company’s profile and their services you must also look for one thing which is the company’s privacy policy as many of them do provide with it. A professional translation company will only know the result for violating the laws of the company so no one could escape from this. Now if you go for a freelance translator then there are many chances for him to vanish if he does anything wrong but a company cannot vanish just like that. You cannot trust the person by trusting the company on this basis would be fine at least.

4. After you found out everything about the company and now it is time to choose your translator then you must also choose the correct person who can suit your needs. You must look for a native speaker who basically grew up speaking the language you want. They should have lived in the country of the language you want for at least a minimum of ten years. Only after checking out all these information pick the one who you think is the best.

The last thing you must note down that if you want to hire a freelance translator and sort out by giving low prices then let me tell you that you will get the result of what you have paid. Its only a Professional Translation Services will provide you with a good quality of work along with a trust. These companies don’t charge much and would offer you with the best and professional translators you are looking for.

Top Ten Tips for a Successful Motorcycle Tour

You chose a country that you thought would suit you, you carefully packed your luggage and your maps, you meticulously planned the route, but still the holiday is a disaster. What more could you have done to ensure the success of the tour? Here are the top ten tips for motorbike touring.

YOUR BIKE

It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people set off on a long tour without making sure that their bike is in the best possible condition it could be. Having your motorcycle serviced before a long tour could save days of heartache, especially if you are planning a trip abroad. In some countries, garages aren’t always as motivated as you are, when it comes to getting your bike back on the road. Sometimes, the whole holiday can be taken up waiting for repairs. Don’t forget to carry spare bulbs.

YOUR CLOTHING

Make sure you have the right clothing. Even in summer months there is a possibility that mountain roads can be subject to inclement weather. It could be forty degrees or it could be less than ten, and it’s a guessing game that you would be wise to avoid. This is when a guided tour with a luggage carrying back-up vehicle comes into its own. Another advantage of a back-up vehicle is the access to water if it does become very hot.

DON’T BITE OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW

Don’t try and cover too much ground in one day. Many people who set out on their own, forget to allow time for refreshment stops. There’s nothing worse than arriving at your planned destination in a state of exhaustion, then quickly eating and climbing into bed. A few consecutive days of this will see you wanting to ditch your bike and catch a bus. Be reasonable with your itinerary.

RIDE WITHIN THE LAW

Is it a race or a motorcycle holiday? Another downer that could happen whilst on tour, is being pulled by the local police and hit with a huge speeding fine, and in some countries I mean huge. Always, but always respect the traffic laws and speed limits, and this applies if you’re touring in your own country too.

PLAN YOUR ROUTE SENSIBLY

When planning your route, make sure you go somewhere interesting. It’s all very well spending the day on fantastic country roads, but when you wash up in that one horse town and you’re sitting in bar all by yourselves, you’ll wish you’d put a little more thought into the route. Again, if are travelling with a guided tour, someone else will have done all the homework for you.

WHEN ARE YOU GOING?

What time of year are you planning to take the tour? Bear in mind, especially if you are travelling to a mountainous region, that even when the sun is shining on the coast, it can snowing in the mountains. In summer, you’re probably going to be fine if you remember to carry the right gear, but be careful in spring and autumn, or you may just have to pack a snow shovel.

DRINKING?

I know that you’ve been set free and are determined to enjoy yourself, but believe me (here speaks the voice of experience), it’s no fun crawling to your bike with a raging hangover, a mouth that feels like a monkey slept in there and a splitting headache. For your own sake and the sake of the people you are travelling with, go easy on the booze.

HOW ARE YOU?

We’ve talked about the condition of your bike, but what about you? You owe it to yourself to feel as well as you can during your tour. I’m not talking about launching into some kind of marathon training before you embark on your trip, but the better you feel, the more you’ll enjoy yourself, so if it means shedding a few pounds, it’s well worth it. Besides looking after yourself, it’s also a good idea to keep an eye on your travelling companions during the tour. It’s always worth asking how someone feels, especially if you know them well and feel they’re not quite on the ball.

DON’T FORGET YOUR CAMERA

You’re in an incredibly beautiful mountain pass, the high peaks have a coating of pure white snow punctured by the most graceful pines you’ve ever seen, and guess what; you forgot you camera. This scenario is not as uncommon as you might think. Before you set off, and I don’t mean in the hour leading up to departure, make a list of all the things you’re likely to need on your trip. I know you want to travel light, but you can always cross things off the list, but you can’t magic them out of thin air once you’ve started.

FRIENDS

This could be the most important one. Go with friends who’ll understand when you get lost, tired or irritable. Better still go with a specialised tour company.

5 Tips For Finding Motorbike Insurance

With the increasing popularity of motorbikes of all kinds, more people in Australia are considering buying a road bike, an off-road bike or a stylish European scooter for use as their main mode of transport, maybe just for fun, for serious sport and even for the commute to work.

Be honest - Insurers will ask many questions to see whether you qualify for their insurance policies and also to calculate your premium rates. You must make sure you answer their questions honestly - otherwise you run the gauntlet of having your claim rejected on the grounds of "non disclosure". If you currently don't lock your bike up, and it doesn't have an alarm fitted then you need to be honest about those things. Better still, store your bike securely and insurance companies will be much more inclined to give you a very good quote.

Don't Estimate - If your motor bike, off road bike or scooter is brand new then you will have no problems knowing its value. However, for motorbike owners who have had a bike in their position for quite some time then you might not accurately know how much its worth - and therefore how much to insure it for. So, similar to insuring a regular commuter car or a classic car you need to get a proper valuation of your bike. If you take a guess at your bike's value you might get it spot on, but more than likely you will over value it thus making your premiums higher than needed. On the flip side you could seriously under value your bike leaving you with insufficient coverage if you lost it to accident, theft or some other form of damage or loss.

Shop Around - Don't just renew your existing motorcycle insurance. Be prepared to look on the Internet on comparison websites and call around insurers to get the most competitive quote possible. You may be able to not only lower the cost of insurance premiums on your motorbike but you might be able to pick up a great deal. In your search for cheaper bike insurance, don't forget to ask around for advice from any motorbike clubs or riders who have been riding bikes for longer.

Motorbike Insurance - Find an insurer who deals specifically with motorbike riders. Insurance companies who specialise in motorbikes and road bikes better understand the needs of motorbike riders and appreciate the value, both in terms of money and personal connection, that riders have for their prized bikes.

Riding Gear - Consider the extras. How much of a hassle would it be to you if you lost your helmet, gloves and boots to some thief? Whats more, many bikers who ride scooters and road bikes also carry many other valuable items such as mp3 players and laptops. Check out what the insurance companies can do to cover those items.

Motorcycle Safety - Ten Top Tips

We all know that riding a bike carries a few more risks than sitting behind the wheel of a car, but by applying a few simple strategies, we can reduce that risk significantly. I’m not here to preach; you’re going to do what you want anyway, and so you should. I’d just like you to do it safely.

BE VISIBLE

By wearing bright clothing and a light coloured helmet, the guy who is talking on his cell phone about last night’s game, has a better chance of seeing you. If all car drivers were as vigilant as the average motorcycle rider, we wouldn’t have to take these measures, but their not, and saying sorry just isn’t enough. Always ride with your headlight on.

CRASH HELMET

We’ve already talked about the crash helmet, but it’s such a crucial piece of kit that it deserves another mention. A white or silver helmet is favourite, but there’s another aspect of the lid that’s probably more important; the fit. An ill fitting helmet can cause an accident by distraction. If it’s too small, it’s going to be very uncomfortable, but if it’s too big, you’ll be forever pulling it back down onto your head or adjusting the strap that feels like it’s going to decapitate you, when you should be watching the road.

SPEED

This probably should be number one. Excessive speed causes more motorcycle accidents than anything else. Apart from being downright unsociable, speed can not only be a sure-fire way of losing your licence, it can also empty your bank account, but I suppose having no money doesn’t matter when you’re dead.

YOUR BIKE

Hopefully, your motorcycle will have been maintained to a certain degree, but before you set out on a journey, whether it be long or short, check that your lights are working and the tyre pressures are what they should be. A visual check of the chain (if you have one) is also a good idea. If you’re riding your own bike, you will notice if there are any unusual sounds coming from the machine. If there are, stop and investigate.

CLOTHING

As we said, bright clothing is better, but a yellow pair of shorts isn’t exactly what I was thinking of. Anyone who has slid across the tarmac for more than two feet will tell you that your clothing needs to offer some protection. If you do come off your bike, the first thing you’re going to do is reach out with your hands in order to protect your face, so wear a decent pair of gloves or forfeit your skin.

ALCOHOL AND DRUGS

I shouldn’t really have to include this section, and the people who use the road under the influence of alcohol or drugs aren’t going to listen to anyone anyway, but I’d just like to ask anyone who does, to let me know when they’re going to be out and about, so that I can keep myself and my family off the road. No, no, no.

RIDING AN UNFAMILIAR BIKE

If you’ve just bought a new bike, or you’ve borrowed your mate’s machine, take a little time to familiarise yourself with the handling before you get too carried away. Even bikes of the same make have their own little foibles and need to feel loved.

TIREDNESS

Tiredness is a definite killer, especially on a motorcycle when you need to be on the ball one hundred percent of the time. I know if you’re on a long journey it’s not easy to pull over to the side of the road and have forty winks, but it may be well worth stopping for a coffee.

RIDING WITH A PILLION

Riding with a pillion can turn your beautiful-handling machine into a monster, especially if you’re not used to it. A pillion affects the balance, performance and handling of any bike, so be aware from the outset that there’s someone behind you. Another thing to bear in mind is that your pillion doesn’t need the living daylights scared out of them. Be courteous to your passenger.

ANTICIPATION

One of the most important weapons in your armoury is anticipation. Try to anticipate trouble before it happens. Ride as if you’re invisible and expect cars to pull out in front of you, so that when they do you are mentally prepared and have adopted a good road position and speed to handle it.

If you fancy it, it may be a good idea to attend a training session or two. I know; I’m not your Dad, but I do want you to arrive safely. Safe riding.

Advice on Finding a Storage Unit for Your Motorcycle

If you are trying to find a storage unit for your motorcycle, there are a number of factors to consider. How often you use the motorcycle, its overall condition, and the weather conditions in your area are the most important things to think about. Outdoor motorcycle storage will be much less expensive than an indoor facility, but may expose your bike to vandalism and damage from the elements. Outdoor storage may still be acceptable if you will be riding the motorcycle frequently to keep it warm and running well.

Many indoor vehicle storage facilities also offer extra services that may be of particular use to motorcycle owners. There are often repair and maintenance stations available for customers to use in working on their vehicles. This can be a great help when your bike has mechanical problems and you can't even drive it off the storage site. Instead of paying for a tow truck, you can simply fix the problem right then and there. Some high-end facilities may even have an on-site mechanic during business hours to handle any repairs that are too complex for the average hobbyist.

If you are not worried about damage or theft, outdoor motorcycle storage will be a cheaper and often easier option than using an indoor vehicle storage facility. If you have space in front of your home, you may even be able to park your bike right there during the off-season. Of course, parking is very scarce in some areas, especially if you live in an apartment. In that case, you can still park outside to save money, but you will probably need to take the bike down to a self-storage facility that allows motorcycle storage.

Indoor motorcycle storage will protect your bike from damage caused by insects or animals. If you must store your motorcycle outside, be sure to always use a protective cover to keep bird droppings and dirt off of the paint. Bird droppings may be especially harmful to your motorcycle's exterior because of the way it can break down the paint.

Sun damage can ruin your motorcycle's seats and tires, so indoor vehicle storage may be your only option in very hot climates. Sunlight exposure will make tires deflate and even crack in extreme temperatures. The seat of your motorcycle may also begin to crack or peel. Paint oxidation may be another consequence of excessive sun exposure. All of these things can drastically reduce the value of your bike, so indoor motorcycle storage rental may be worth the extra money if you have a classic model to protect.

Indoor storage units will also protect your bike from theft or vandalism. Classic motorcycles are a popular target for thieves, especially when they have been left in the same parking space for a long period of time. This makes it very obvious that nobody is using the bike and it may be unattended. Most indoor vehicle storage facilities have access gates to prevent access to the entire property, along with security guards, alarm systems, and video surveillance.

Outdoor storage requires more work to get ready because you must winterize the motorcycle before taking it to storage. If you are storing your bike in an indoor auto storage facility, it will not be subjected to the same extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Storing your bike indoors can also make it easier to do the actual winterizing work. Being able to work in warmth while staying safe from the elements will help encourage you to properly service and winterize your vehicle.

To properly winterize your bike for storage, you primarily need to be concerned with maintaining a charge in the battery. Like all batteries, motorcycle batteries tend to lose their charge when left unused for long periods of time. In fact, because motorcycle batteries are smaller than standard car batteries, if left alone throughout the entire winter it is possible that your battery charge could diminish to the point where it will be unable to even take a charge in the future.

You can purchase battery chargers to give your bike's battery a low rate of charge periodically to keep it running. These types of chargers will turn themselves off to avoid overcharging your battery, and they can be permanently attached to the battery while the motorcycle is in storage.

You also need to be concerned about the possible deterioration of the fuel in your bike's tank. Fuel stored in a motorcycle gas tank will deteriorate over time while the bike is in storage. This can cause a gummy build-up in not only your gas tank, but throughout the entire fuel system, which results in your bike being difficult, or even impossible to start. This can be avoided by properly winterizing your motorcycle before finding an outdoor storage unit.

Packing for A Motorcycle Tour – Top Ten Tips

It’s always a problem knowing what to pack for a motorcycle tour. Fortunately, that feeling of utter freedom we get when we are riding our bikes far outweighs the problem of limited luggage space. Having said that, the problem doesn’t go away, but by applying a little thought, it can be overcome. Here are some tips to make life easier on the road.

TRAVEL LIGHLTY

It’s tempting to throw as much as possible into your panniers, but remember, every ounce you pack onto your bike reduces handling qualities. Add to this a pillion and the needle on the pleasure-ometer begins to swing to the low side. Of course, there are some things that you can’t do without, but the keyword here is need. Take what you need and nothing more. If you are going on an organised guided tour, the company should (if it’s worth its salt) have a back-up vehicle that will carry your luggage.

PACK SENSIBLY

To optimise the handling of your bike, place heavy items at the bottom of your panniers.

BEFORE YOU GO

In the weeks leading up to your planned tour, begin making a list of what you might need to take with you. At this stage, it doesn’t matter if the list is too long; you can always cross things off as the time draws nearer. By using this method, you will ensure that the things you take with you are what you really need. You will also reduce the risk of leaving behind an essential item.

MOTORCYCLE LUGGAGE

Unless you like riding for hours with a rucksack strapped to your back, it’s invariably better to have panniers and back box. Detachable panniers are great; they can be unhooked as carried like a suitcase. Belt bags are also popular for carrying things like money, credit cards and mobile phone.

TO ROLL OR NOT TO ROLL

You’ll have to decide this for yourselves, but personally speaking I prefer to roll my clothes before placing them in a bag inside the panniers. Other riders like to lay things flat, but it doesn’t work for me. Some bikers like to use zippable plastic bags that are sat upon to squeeze out the air before they are sealed. They claim that the vacuum keeps their clothes crease-free, but of course, I’m just not heavy enough (hee-hee).

TANK BAGS

Tank bags are fine and some of expandable ones can hold quite a lot of luggage, but it does take the fun out of it a little bit for me. If you’re going on a tour with a back-up vehicle, you only have to put up with the tank bag until you reach your starting point, then someone else carries it for you; great.

PLASTIC SEALABLE BAG

It’s always good to keep your smelly socks away from your good clothes. How many times have you gone into your luggage and found that you can’t decide whether you’ve worn those socks once before or not?

SMALL ITEMS

Very often small items are forgotten, such as; mobile phone charger, camera, camera batteries, first-aid kit, toiletries etc. This is when list-making comes into its own. If you’re going to a hot country, don’t forget your insect bite/sting cream. Something I always carry is a pack of tissues; I know it’s just a small item, but it comes under ‘Essentials’ for me.

REALLY ESSENTIAL

If you get as excited as I do prior to a motorcycle tour, please pay extra attention to making sure that you are carrying your bike documents and driving licence. If you are going overseas, don’t forget your passport, or you’ll be turning around and going home. .

DON’T FORGET

Unless you are heading for some remote region, there will always be a chance to buy things that you forget, but you aren’t really going on a shopping trip so try to remember as much as you can. No doubt, there will be something you need, and it can be fun finding these things in a foreign town, but if the list is long, it can become tiresome.

Well, you’ve packed and you’re on your way. Have a great time and ride safely. May the roads be long and winding, and the sky blue.

Wintering Your Motorcycle in Self Storage

Motorcycles are great summer and fair weather transportation ways to get around. They are usually quite fast and save more than a little on gas when compared to driving a car. When the weather changes, however, and the street surfaces are no longer dry and clear, wintering your motorcycle in self storage is an excellent way to keep it safe, clean and protected from the winter elements.

In many starts, winter comes every year. During the winter, temperatures drop sometimes to below freezing and are a hazard just to be out in if you are not dressed properly. When winter comes, the grounds are often covered with snow and ice, conditions that make it impossible to ride a motorcycle safely. This means that for the most part, motorcycles cannot be driven in the winter in climates where snow and other road conditions make the roads a danger to motorcycles.

If you life in a state where winter is significantly different that summer, spring and fall and you own a motorcycle, you have a definite need to store your bike every year to protect it. Self storage may be the best option for storing your motorcycle. Many self storage facilities offer drive up units so that you can drive your bike right to the unit if you need and back it straight into the unit. These facilities understand the special needs of motorcyclists and usually have drive up units that are sized to hold your motorcycle and little more. In exchange for the smaller unit, you can be sure that your rental price will not be as costly as if you had to rent an entire large storage unit.

Another option for self storage is if you belong to a biker's club. One of the benefits may be that in exchange for paying annual dues, there is a place, such as a warehouse, where all of the bikers can store their motorcycles for the year. This is an excellent option to choose if you want to have access to your bike indoors for winter repairs. Some warehouses that are large enough may even allow you to ride your motorcycle indoors at safe, slower speeds.

Although you may have a garage, it doesn't mean there's space in there for your car. Even a larger garage can be needed for other things and vehicles that you use during the winter. This means that self storage can be a wise choice to get your motorcycle off the street and into a dry unit that will keep it protected from the elements until the winter season has passed.

Wintering your motorcycle in self storage involves a few basic steps if you plan to leave it sitting for several months without running it. You should have an oil change done and be sure that the appropriate oil is replaced in the engine. Even though you are not going to be driving it, the wrong type of oil sitting in the engine without use all winter can be hazardous in the engine's internal cylinders.

Even when you have a great place to store your motorcycle for the winter, you should be sure to have a way to cover it, such as with a heavy duty motorcycle cover or a tarp. The motorcycle covered is the preferred way because it will be designed specifically for a motorcycle and will not scratch the painted surfaces where pin striping and other items may be on the top layer.

You can check with auto garages as a place to winter your motor cycle. Some of these self storage garages do require you to pay your entire winter fee in advance. If so, it is sometimes because you will be storing your motorcycle in an elevated area that is not conducive to being moved or is stored behind other vehicles or motorcycles and cannot be moved. If you decide to use a garage, they are safe places but you need to be sure that you won't need to move your motorcycle or have access to it during the winter storage period because changes are you won t be able to do anything more than look at it where it stands.

No matter what type of self storage you choose for your motorcycle, give yourself the peace of mind by selecting a self storage facility that you trust, that has a reputation of keeping things organized, that you can afford and where your motorcycle will be stored safely.
